July 26, 2015 : By AndreaI came across a video this weekend that I just had to share and you just HAVE to watch. Making a small effort to include siblings in your piano students’ practice time is well worth your time.
Even the most squabbly of siblings can find equal ground around music, and this means they will be more apt to gravitate towards those happy times at the piano… which means more practice time and happy piano teachers! As an experienced Singapore piano teacher, playing the piano for over 17 years, giving piano lessons Singapore for more than 3 years, I believe that the role of piano teachers is not only to have students learn the piano well, but also to inspire them to enjoy the beauty of piano music. Since 2009, I have been conducting piano lessons in Singapore ranging from young kids to adults, teaching graded piano classes, to recreational piano lessons. Valerie took her first graded piano examination at the age of 9, while juggling with the academic stress in Singapore’s educational system.
Valerie sang as a Soprano in her school choirs since her secondary school days and served as the President in St Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School Choir and as the Assistant Student Conductor in Tampines Junior College Choir as well. To further her interest in music, Valerie also learns how to play the Keyboard (similar but yet different from piano), and performs with her friends in church.
Thus far, she has helped young children to pick up the art of piano playing, fulfill the dream of adults who always want to learn the piano, and even teach pop songs on piano for students who are performing in a month’s time. Other than just piano lessons, Valerie also organize annual concerts for her students to gain experience performing on stage.
Valerie conducts most of his one-to-one piano lessons at her home, which is located at Pasir Ris (opposite Downtown East).
The length of one piano lesson vary from 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the level of the students.
What differentiates Valerie from other piano teachers is her expertise in teaching classical and pop piano lessons.
Piano students who wants to learn any pop song, simply have to let Valerie know and she will source for the piano music sheet and teach it to them. Although a piano at home would be good for learning, but it’s understandable that you might not want to get a new one right from the start, as it is not cheap (minimum S$9xxx). Probably yes, as you’ve known more about her here, than any random piano teacher assigned to you by a piano lesson agency or music school. Probably no, as you might want to know more about Valerie, and let her know what are your specific needs for your piano lessons so she can help you. If you'd like to find out more about my lessons, or would like to work with my teachers, drop me your enquiry here! May 27, 2013 : By AndreaFor many piano teachers, spring recitals are now a distant memory and the lazy hazy days of summer are creeping in.
Feel free to steal these ideas (and printable 3-fold brochure I created to advertise this piano coolness to my studio found here!) for your own studio. Learn the Leadsheets – Choose two of your favourite Top 40 songs from my stack and learn how to improvise a seriously cool left hand accompaniment. Mary Had A Little Shark – have fun twisting some well-known pieces and making them your very own. Show Your Stuff – learn how to use music notation software to publish your compositions as real live sheet music!

Fast and Furious – learn some good muscle-building exercises and technique to really make your fingers fly.
I’m excited to be offering something cool and different to my piano students during July and August and I know my attendance rates and the motivation of my students will be really strong. This plan is super simple to put into action… made even more simple by the two TeachPianoToday products I’m using! Love your ideas as always; however, I am starting my summer off by attending the Van Cliburn International Competition.
Hi Andrea, I would also like to use your brochure and need to make a few minor adjustments. One of the biggest pieces of advice we give to piano teachers who email us looking for help in growing their piano teaching studio is to be open to new ideas, to embrace different ways of doing things and to continue to evolve. Buddy Practice Is Beneficial – Not only do piano students often practice alone, but they often practice alone with their backs to everything that’s going on around them! Bonding on the bench is one of the most effective ways of strengthening a connection to the piano.
Sure, the duet was fantastic, but I imagine the sibling support increased dramatically when the others were incorporated.
You can sign up with music schools, piano lessons Singapore agencies, or private piano teachers. Still learning ballet then, she discovered the love for the piano after a few piano lessons. With her strong background in piano, she also plays the piano accompaniment for her choir in concerts and competitions. She found her passion in teaching piano, and would love to share and inspire her students in their musical journey. Valerie works with experienced piano teachers as well and interviews them extensively before inviting them to join her teaching faculty. For example, she has given piano lessons to an adult student who want to learn a Korean pop song on piano – Can You Hear Me by Taeyeon. But do note that Valerie will still conduct basic piano lessons (if needed) to equip students to play the pop songs. I have to compete with the lake, the pool, the cabin, the boat, the waterslides and, most recently, the Monster Truck rally… but I can do it! We’ll explore two awesome songs that go well with piano and show you how to sing and play like a star.
We’ll be learning about theme and variation and improvisation as we take simple pieces and make them ah-maaaz-ing! Perform your own creations during our Composers Coffee House evening where you can trade your sheet-music with your friends and even offer it up for sale to the audience during our charity sheet music auction! We’ll be learning how to play some famous piano riffs that will knock your friends’ socks off! You wouldn’t happen to have the brochure available in a format that I could change a little, would you? But even if they are the only pianist in the family, including siblings in home practice activities can have a lot of benefits.

Grabbing a buddy to spend time with at the piano is one way of kicking the loneliness factor to the curb.
Even if your students are well beyond preliminary piano level, they can have a lot of fun teaching their siblings to play simple songs or understand simple concepts. It can be as simple as giving a sibling a tambourine and a steady rhythmic pattern to copy while your students play the piano. Plus… do you think a parent is ever going to discontinue piano lessons after they see their beloved DNA all making music together? Valerie also has her Grade 8 in Music Theory with Merit in her bag of music qualifications. The concert is not organized to compete among students, but to let everyone gain stage experience, and of course, a stage to perform for their loved ones.  More about Say It With Music 2014 can be found here. Valerie can refer to you piano teachers who can do piano lessons in the North, South, West, and Central of Singapore. If you teach piano lessons during the summer it can be difficult to keep Summer-Lovin’ Sam motivated and practicing. He can stay in one stream and complete the full 9 weeks of activities, or he can bounce around between them completing different sets of 3 week activities. We’ll have a mini photo shoot and create CD cover art for your very own two-track record.
Learn all about composing and create your very own pieces right from the very first lesson! Plus… one of the most effective ways of learning a concept is to teach it to someone else! Plus, they’ll be strengthening their own understanding, learning different ways of thinking about concepts and honing their own teaching skills! You don’t have to offer an all out summer camp, but you can change up your lessons just enough to make them interesting and unique.
I have purposely not re-created the wheel when planning my summer piano lessons (I like to enjoy my summer too!). Then quickly write simple guitar chords above your piano students’ music and ask them to play together at home.
Most method books include words to pieces… so highlight them and ask a brother to sing along. Maybe it’s because he does not feel that special anymore since his sisters are doing piano also. However, they are offered in a format that is fun and more flexible and this makes all the difference.
