At the conclusion of the four month trial, researchers found that the two carbohydrate restricted conditions led to greater weight loss and fat loss (both groups lost an average of ~9 lbs vs. Now to be fair, this is just the summary report from a conference presentation so I can’t exactly go through the methodology to see what kind of diets the two low-carb groups were following the other 5 days of the week.
Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the participants in those two intermittent low carbohydrate groups actually ate fairly low carb for more than just those two days a week. But in any case, the important thing to note here is once again, we see evidence of superior body composition results as well as health outcomes when you consciously reduce (*note I did not say eliminate) the amount of carbohydrate you consume in your diet. Incorporating a few deliberate low-carbohydrate days into your regular routine can also be a fantastic way to avoid gaining a whack load of weight through the Holiday season, which is fast approaching.
September 2009 – I eliminated most sources of sugar in my diet (for a definition of “sugar” click here) six days per week. January 2011 – I reduced starch intake to one serving per day, but continued to eat fruits and vegetables in an unrestricted manner.
May 2011 – Reduced carbohydrate intake to less than 50 grams per day and reduced protein intake to approximately 120 grams per day, entering a state of nutritional ketosis. Another way to see the implications of these changes on my actual intake is shown in the figure below. The most externally obvious change that occurred as I ratcheted down my carbohydrate intake was a decrease in body fat. The other (profoundly simple) “test” I used to track my weight loss was my waist measurement.
Between February 2010 and July 2010 I had a bad bout of swine flu, which left me in pretty rough shape for a while. Pay more attention to fat mass, separately, than overall body weight, and do the same with lean mass. Most people, especially physically active people, probably experience some seasonal variation in body fat, especially at low levels. In Daily Mail we can read about twin brothers, both medical doctors who decided to find out more about nutrition and how the body reacts to various foods. Approximately 60-65% of patients with epilepsy become seizure free with antiepileptic drug treatment. Researchers aimed to review the high-fat, low-carbohydrate ketogenic and modified Atkins diets for the treatment of refractory epilepsy (drug-resistant epilepsy) in adults.
The modified Atkins diet and the ketogenic diet include high-fat foods such as bacon, eggs, mayonnaise, butter, hamburgers and heavy cream, with certain fruits, vegetables, nuts, avocados, cheeses and fish. The ketogenic diet is restrictive, not very palatable and logistically difficult to execute. By contrast, the typical American diet derives about 50% of calories from carbohydrate, 35% from fat and 15% from protein.
The scientists examined five studies of ketogenic diet treatment in 47 adults and five studies of modified Atkins diet treatment in 85 adults with refractory epilepsy.
Across all studies, 32% of ketogenic diet-treated patients and 29% of modified Atkins diet-treated patients achieved 50% or greater seizure reduction.
Klein comments, “Unfortunately, long-term use of these diets is low because they are so limited and complicated.

In both the ketogenic diet and modified Atkins diet studies, retention was poor with 51% of ketogenic diet-treated and 42% of modified Atkins diet-treated patients ending the diet before study completion. The authors conclude that for treatment of refractory epilepsy, current data do not provide an evidential basis for the ketogenic diet and modified Atkins diet use. Ketogenic diet and modified Atkins diet treatment show moderate effectiveness, but in some patients, the effect is remarkable.
Medical News Today recently reported omega-3 fish oil could reduce seizure frequency for epilepsy patients.

The American Diabetes Association recommends a diet for diabetics that has a wide variety of foods.
As I have researched and studied this area it is becoming more apparent that continuing even with small amounts of grains and starchy vegetables will be too much of a stresser on the pancreas and metabolism and will  yield continued high blood sugars for the average diabetic, type 1 or type 2.
On the other hand, eating healthy fats is what is going to get our blood sugar and insulin levels to stabilize. My focus in this article is on diabetes treatment and prevention because it is what we are dealing with in our family. After 2 months on this diet my husband has lost 25 lbs and his blood sugars are much more in line with recommended blood sugars. 5 lbs in the Mediterranean condition), as well as yielding superior benefits in decreasing the prevalence of insulin resistance (22% reduction in the low carb calorie-restricted, 14% reduction for the ad lib group and 4% reduction in the Mediterranean group). In fact, we can take the whole periodic, deliberate low intake philosophy one step further for really explosive results… but that’s a blog article for next week!
As a result, I probably lost more lean mass than I would have liked, or expected to, even transiently. My body fat probably fluctuations between 7 and 10% over the course of year now, often a function of activity type (more than activity level). Long article… The twin eating low carb had best results but felt fuzzy-headed and lacked in energy. Both diets have proved successful in children, yet they are studied in adults insufficiently.
The Atkins diet has been modified for use in patients with tough-to-treat epilepsy as an easier-to-execute variety of the ketogenic diet. US governmental guidelines for adults recommend 45-65% calories from carbohydrates, 10-20% from fat and 10-35% from protein. Also, 9% of the ketogenic diet and 5% of the modified Atkins diet-treated patients achieved greater than 90% seizure reduction.
The results persisted long term, but unlike in children, the effects appear not to last after discontinuation of the diet. Hyperlipidemia, the most serious, reversed after treatment discontinuation, and weight loss was the most common side effect.
Even those with 75-100% seizure frequency reduction eventually stop the diet due to culinary and social restrictions.
A study claims epilepsy patients could reduce seizure frequency by consuming low doses of omega-3 fish oil every day. In order to post comments, please make sure JavaScript and Cookies are enabled, and reload the page.

Thanks for visiting!Recently my family has delved into yet another diet in our house, the low carb, high fat diet to deal with my husband’s pre-diabetes.
I have heard SO many success stories about people no longer being diabetic (type 2) after going low carb, or even primal with some carbohydrates! Atkins that this was the way to go and yet the message is still not getting to the people that need it! I think we are slowly moving in the right direction – thanks for sharing such great information! I love the example you’ve set and I totally agree with this diet being a great source of healing for certain conditions.
I’m still experimenting with what carb levels work best for me while conquering sugar addiction AND hypothyroidism. My goal was to reduce my waist to 32 inches and I calculated I would need to lose 20 pounds of fat, without losing any muscle mass, to do this.
Lean mass took a big hit initially (although I believe in my case, the prolonged illness didn’t help), but then recovered. However, a review of current research published in Neurology presents a promising alternative treatment for epileptic seizure reduction – diets high in fats and low in carbohydrates. That also includes rice, beans like black beans and kidney beans, chips, and many snack foods  Dr. It is great to hear this is helping your husband, and I’m sure this will help others who are struggling with diabetes as well. It’s a pretty remarkable test that is now the gold standard for measuring body composition. As silly as this sounds, I recall, back in the spring of 2009 while stuck in an airport, using calculus to integrate the volume of fat I needed to lose from my waist (both visceral – around my organs – and under my skin) to get down to a 32-inch waist. Total body weight is shown on top of each bar, while the blue bar represents lean tissue and the red bar represents fat. Also, Totally agree with your stance on the artificial sweeteners, I hate seeing my diabetic patients drinking diet sodas and eating highly processed foods with artificial everything! Back when I was in high school we relied on a combination of calipers (in the hands of an experienced user) and something called hydrostatic testing, where you are weighed in and out of water to calculate your percentage of body fat. It’s actually an easy problem if you can remember how to integrate the volume of an oval “cylinder” and you know the density of fat. Hence, in September 2009, I weighed 195 pounds, of which 156 was lean, 39 was fat, and my body fat (the number below) was 20%.
I know some sources recommend only doing The keto diet for a short term, so I’m curious how long are guys planning to continue? Doing in the “wrong” way can result in equal loss of fat and lean mass (or, worse yet, disproportionate loss of lean mass).
Without any loss of lean tissue, I had reduced fat mass to 13 pounds and body fat to under 8%.
