Since 3,500 calories equals 1 pound of body fat, a person wanting to lose 1 pound per week will have to either reduce consumption by 500 calories per day (below their caloric needs) or keep consumption the same and increase physical activity enough to burn that amount. The following chart shows how many calories you should be consuming daily to maintain your current weight. Moderately involves normal life style activity plus equivalent to walking 1-3 miles per day at 3-4 mph. Active involves normal life style activity plus equivalent to walking more than 3 miles per day at 3-4 mph. Metabolism increases as a result of exercise so calories continue to burn for up to 24 hours after exercise. While excess calorie consumption is the most commonly thought of cause for a person being overweight or obese, other considerations may be involved. A listing of how many calories to burn to lose 1 pound based on weight and type of exercise. Much of the information available as to how many carbs we should eat per day to lose weight is quite inaccurate for the average person. Yes, tracking the amount of carbs you eat on a daily basis is important, but choosing foods with the right kind of carbs is even more important. Tracking the amount of carbs you eat on a daily basis is important, but there is more to it than just the amount. When it comes to carbohydrates, I try to take in whole grains, nuts, seeds, fruits & vegetables. That means that if your diet consists of 2,000 calories that you should take in 250 grams of carbs per day. Following the recommendation from the USDA on how many carbs to eat everyday would probably result in weight gain and at the least in not losing weight — assuming you were eating the right amounts of other foods.
By sticking with 50-100 grams of carbs a day, you can still lose weight and do so in a much more healthy and reasonable fashion.
If you want to take an aggressive approach you can limit yourself to less than 50 carbs a day. However, low carb diets are going to be much better for you than what the traditional food pyramid suggests. The amount of carbohydrates you eat do play a role in losing weight, but there are other factors that come into play.
Insulin resistance is when insulin is no longer able to efficiently remove blood sugar from the body’s blood stream. So if your body is going to respond appropriately to carbs, your insulin sensitivity must be up.
Barring certain medical explanations, however, the formula for weight loss is simple -- consume fewer calories than you expend (burn more calories than you eat). Your body will begin drawing on its fat storage for energy and weight will begin decreasing. In addition, exercise causes the body to break down fat and release it into the bloodstream. In addition, many conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, depression and injuries can dramatically limit a person's activity level. I think that most people think, if a person is overweight, they are just lazy or eat too much.
Please consult with your physician or health care professional for guidance on any health concern. Although many manage to lose bodyweight successfully, others may almost certainly get their dropped pounds back. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests that about half of our daily calories should come from carbohydrates. Sure, if you are a very active person, play sports or are young and growing, you could use close to this amount of carbohydrates, but the majority of us don’t burn that much energy throughout the day. One gram of  a carbohydrate from an apple is going to be much better for me than one gram of a carbohydrate from a french fry or candy bar … obviously, right!? Most of these carbs should come from fruits and vegetables, but some whole grains are good for you while a beer or glass of wine is just plain good for the soul. If i eat a lot of protein and less carbs i still dont see much weight loss so i have sticked to eating less sugar and less carbs to curb the weight and it’s working for me.
Until someone has suffered from depression or some other health condition, they have no idea how hard it can be for many of us to control our weight. The good news is that the connection among our daily caloric intake and fat reduction (or increase) is fairly tight.
Health experts claim that the average person begins to reduce bodyweight by eating less than 1,650 Kcal daily, but these are merely broad statements.

This is why Americans (on average) are gaining weight every year — because we are told incorrect figures.
I wish more people acknowledged how much easier it is for some people to look good than it is for others. They know that they should go on a diet and exercise regime but the lack of measurable goals creates uncertainty and this leads to failure before to even begin! To bypass this problem and have clear goals on what you want to achieve, you can start your weight loss process by doing some simple calorie calculations. By calculating how many calories you should be eating per day and how many calories you should be burning per day, you can have a better picture about your daily calorie needs and a rough estimate as to when you will be able to reach your ideal weight.
You do not have to keep a pen and paper because our daily calorie calculator will do the hard part. When do you lose weight? There are many factors that affect how much weight you can lose (and when) but in its simplest form weight loss will occur when the calories you burn are more than the calories you consume. So if you manage to control these 2 sources and create a calorie deficit you will eventually start losing weight. How many calories are in a pound?Let’s add one more parameter to our equation which is 1 pound of fat = 3500 calories aprx.
This means that if you consume 3500 more calories than what you burn in a period of time you will gain one pound but if you manage to burn 3500 more calories than you consume you will lose 1 pound. What is my daily calorie requirement? Many studies have found that in general women need 1500-2000 kcal to maintain their current weight and for men the range goes to 2000-2500 Kcal.
We will use BMR to calculate how many calories you should be eating per day and then demonstrate with an example how many calories you should burn per day if you want to lose weight in a specified amount of time. If you want to lose weight you should be consuming less than 2200 calories per day and if you want to gain weight you should be consuming more than 2200 calories per day.How many calories to eat if you want to lose weight? Before getting into a real example of how to calculate the calories you should be eating per day for weight loss let me say that this is only an estimate and it is not guaranteed that by following this number you will lose or gain weight.
Doing some basic calculations you can find out that 17500 calories in 2 months is about 8750 calories per month or 2187 per week or 313 kcal per day.
So in theory, if you manage to save 313 calories per day you will lose 5lb in 2 monthsStep 3: Subtract the number of calories you need to save per day (Step 3 above) from your daily calorie needs (step 1 above)Daily Calorie needs – Calorie savings per day = 2000 – 313 = 1687 kcal per day.
Especially at the beginning you will lose water weight and in some cases you may also lose muscle.
So the results in the first few weeks may be misleading. When you make sudden or drastic changes to your diet the body will try to adapt by lowering the metabolic rate. In other words it enters a protective mode by reducing the number of calories it needs per day. As a result weight loss may slow down, here is how to lose weight and keep it off.The absolute minimum amount of calories you can consume per day is 1000-1100 kcal. Anything above that can have other implications to your health and normal body functioning.Do not forget that drinks also carry calories so make sure that you include drinks in your daily calorie calculations. You can read our article on the 5 best healthy weight loss drinks that work to find out which drinks are ‘weight loss friendly’.You can use a technique called “calorie cycling” to make the process easier to follow. This means that once you calculate your daily calorie needs you can go above and below this range on different days of the week. If for example you daily kcal needs are 1700 you can choose to go above this number on Monday and Wednesday and below this number the rest days of the week but try to avoid exaggerations. Weight loss depends on a lot more factors and calculating the calories you need per day is just your starting point.
I am walking 2-3 times per week for about 30 minutes and would like to lose 5 pounds before the summer. Your BMR is 1603 kcal and your daily calorie needs (to maintain your current weight) is 2205 calories. Please note that this is just an indication since there are many other factors that may affect the rate you will lose weight. Lilian April 7, 2012 at 7:58 amEating a good breakfast in the morning can help you spread the remaining calories throughout the day without feeling that you have to count calories every time you eat.
Calculate on average how many calories you consume in breakfast and then allocate the rest 50% for launch, 25% for dinner and the rest for snacking!
Please explain Alex Chris April 10, 2012 at 5:50 amMartin HiThank you for the interesting question.
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) and RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) are closely related as they both present the amount of daily energy (calories) required by the body to carry out normal physiological functions.
When using a calculator, like the one above, the results of both BMR and RMR should be the same but when these measurements are taken in a lab, BMR calculation is more strict as to the conditions it is taken.
For example it is required to sleep for at least 8 hours etc while RMR conditions are less strick so it is expected that RMR result will be slightly higher. For the purpose of calculating your daily calorie needs, the result presented by our BMR calculator above is more than sufficient. Christina April 22, 2012 at 8:13 amI lost 10 pounds just by cutting down soft drinks and sweets. Alex Chris April 24, 2012 at 3:38 pmJordan HiIn short, yes you can lose weight without doing any calorie calculations. The problem lies in the fact that most do nothing to lose that extra weight so it all adds up over the years.Knowing calorie requirements and how to get rid of excess is a great way of enjoying the festive season with a little bit less guilt. David Allen May 12, 2012 at 9:16 amI like the fact that you have a calculator tool on there and you can use proper measurement in there Kilos and centimetres instead of the antiquated system that only America is too scared to let go of. Whichever weights and measures system you like, there is some useful info in the article if you need to shed a bit of weight. Jason Grant-Henriques May 13, 2012 at 3:53 pmThis was probably the most comprehensive explanation of weight loss that I have ever read. John June 30, 2012 at 6:14 amHi there,I am trying to figure out my physical activity level on the top of the site.
I exercise everyday, and lately I’ve been spinning on my Airdyne bike pretty vigorously (~225-235 watts) for an hour and brisk walking with my girlfriend 2-3 miles in the evenings. The bike says I burn 1000 calories, and although I sure feel and look as if it has burned that much, I feel it’s exaggerating the amount big time.

Don August 19, 2012 at 7:44 pmGood stuff Vanja Stace September 9, 2012 at 11:47 pmHi can you please check the automatic calculation? It told me to CONSUME 604 calories per day but when I calculated manually it worked out that I should REDUCE intake by 604 calories.
Your Basic Metabolic Rate is 1428.5 calories Your daily calorie needs based on your current activity level is 2214 caloriesTo reach your goal, you will need to reduce your daily calorie intake by 1610 calories, which means to consume 604 calories daily. Alex September 10, 2012 at 7:28 amVanja HiBased on your data the automatic calculation is correct. By doing so you need to save 758 calories per day, which brings your daily calorie intake to 1456.Please also note that this calculation is only an indication and nothing else.
