Pita bread is delicious, healthy and incredibly versatile – and on top of all that, it is unbelievably cheap. This is probably not the most authentic Indian cuisine there is, but I find it super delicious (and it’s definitely cheap and healthy). Spices: Curry powder, turmeric, or garam masala (or some combination of them) are all awesome for curry. Enjoy our delicious, guilt-free dessert bars that are full of great flavora€”all with just a handful of simple ingredients. Healthy Choice brand recently launched their new variety of frozen meals inspired by the TV show Top Chef. I just had to investigate. There are 8 different varieties of Top Chef Healthy Choice Frozen Meals, but I only evaluated two of them. Hydrolyzed soy protein: A soy protein that has been broken down by an acid to become a flavor enhancer. Disodium inosinate and guanylate: Another flavor enhancer that is not vegan or vegetarian friendly because it can be made from animal products. Most Healthy Choice frozen meals are about 230-330 calories on average and up to 6 grams of fat. I rate Healthy Choice meals, even the Top Chef variety, second to frozen meal brands like Kashi and Amy’s. I see that they are advertising a line of Healthy Choice 100% Natural meals now with no preservatives.
I often buy these when they’re on sale at the grocery store (2 for $5 dollars or so) and put them in the work freezer. Chinese restaurants in the US often “Americanize” their meals by adding sugar, fat and salt, but this recipe cuts them back while adding more nutritious vegetables.
Today, many people are busier than they have ever been, with more hours at work, more class credits, more responsibilities, and more pressure.
Having more to do means having less time to take care of one’s self and one’s own personal needs. My sister and I are left to make our own meals, on top of hours of homework,so we typically do not have a lot of time to make dinner.
Oskaloosa, Iowa – Eating healthy can be a real challenge for individuals and families that are constantly on the go.
Barbara Anderson, a Family Nutrition and Health Program Specialist for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, discussed options to help people eat healthy meals in a hurry.

She shared that by using the soup recipe, she would be able to make the equivalent  of 7 cans of cream of mushroom soup for approximately .10 cents per can, versus the name brand cost of over a dollar a can. Those and many other recipes are available by purchasing the book from the ISU online store, or by stopping by the local extension office Monday thru Friday 8 am to 4:30 pm. If you would like know more about the Mahaska County ISU Extension Office, you can find them on their website HERE. If you’re willing to be creative, on top of crunching some numbers, there are a ton of meals you can come up with that are delicious, healthy, and cheap. In my household, a $6 bag of organic rolled oats makes a whole week of breakfasts for two people (that comes out to about 40 cents each per meal.
A $5-$6 bag of rice, plus $3-$4 worth of beans will make enough lunches for two people for a week (which comes out to about 60-70 cents per meal per person). I buy mine from a local Middle-Eastern bakery where they make their own (without any preservatives: just flour, water, yeast, and salt). One pita like this is more than enough to fill you up if you need a quick snack which costs next to nothing. Next spread the sweet potato over the pita, leaving some space around the edge to be like the crust. Eating healthy and delicious food need no longer be expensive; with some careful planning and some creativity, you can make awesome, healthy meals for next to nothing. Preparing all of your own meals and snacks is the single best way to save money and eat healthier. When I was traveling in the UK I was amazed at the extent of ready-made or pre-prepared meals – aisles and aisles. I saw some of these, but there is no info on the nutrition facts except when you find them in the store.
A harmonious blending of flavors (like sweet and sour), colors (bright and neutral) and textures (smooth and chewy) achieves a dynamic dish. Many people tend to get fast food because they don’t  have the time to make a meal for themselves or their families. She works from early in the morning until late at night, so she is often not available to make dinners at night. From canned soups, to skillet meals, to baked meals, this brand has so many healthy quick meal choices.

This meal is a delicious blend of pot stickers with whole-grain rice, vegetables, and an Asian style sauce. Convenience foods such as fast food and, in some cases, those in the frozen food isle can seem to help make life easier by offering options that may take less time than traditional food preparation methods.
She helped to demonstrate not only the cost savings available to preparing something as simple as a homemade soup, but also the nutritional value. Add some nuts and seeds (go heavier on the sunflower seeds than the pumpkin seeds and almonds, which are more expensive) yogurt, milk, cinnamon, a little honey or even cocoa powder to make it more delicious. Add as much onion and garlic as you want, since it’s delicious, healthy, and also costs next to nothing. Add the tomato slices and the kale (you can embed the kale right into the sweet potato so it doesn’t slide off). You might want more or less yogurt or milk depending on how thick you want it (but don’t skimp on the spices no matter what). Keep in mind though: some of the ingredients mentioned above are not, in themselves, cheap. She enjoys writing and sharing the latest hair fashions including caring for hair, and giving hair style tutorials; tips for having great skin and a healthy body just to name a few things.
By combining the frozen rice and vegetables with the sauce and three tablespoons of water in a skillet I can have a delicious meal in 18 minutes! Its true that most of these ingredients are not as cheap as oatmeal, but since they are not the main part of the meal, you aren’t going to be using much of them per meal, which means that, spread over time, these extra ingredients are not going to cost you all that much either.
Add the other vegetables, and the tofu; let it cook long enough for the tofu and vegetables to get nice and spice-ified, and for the sauce to thicken to your liking. That way you can keep track of exactly what you are consuming (not to mention exactly what the ingredients of what you are consuming actually cost).
Offering a little advice for getting through tough days is another subject she enjoys adding her 2 cents on. Spices, too, are cheap and healthy, and can be added to the mix as a whole, or to individual servings for the sake of variety.
Think of it this way, the more you spend on groceries, the less likely you will be to eat out – which will be way, way cheaper in the long run. Finally, add a little sauce to it, like sushi su (vinegar, sugar, and salt) or sweet chili sauce (vinegar, sugar, sweet chilies) – both are easy to make and the ingredients are not expensive. You may want more variety than that, but the more you can eat this meal the better it will be for your wallet (and without sacrificing either health or deliciousness). For even more variety, change the type of beans you use from week to week, or try lentils, chickpeas, or any other type of legume instead.
