You’ll be happy to know that the muscular imbalances around the hip are treatable, and can be addressed with the proper exercise program. Aside from performing the hip flexion action, the hip flexor group plays an important role in spinal stabilization – specifically the iilipsoas group. Since our medial hip flexors are working overtime we also start to rely on our gluteal group and external rotators to assist our hip flexors. If you have ever wondered why stretching your hip flexors doesn’t seem to have a lasting effect, this is why.
The program below has helped a countless number of clients—in addition to myself—so I am confident that it will help you too!
Now that you’ve decreased tension in the front of your hip and activated your core, the next step is training your glutes to fire in a full hip extension.
The next step in preventing and treating hip flexor pain is to ensure that you are completing exercises that properly engage your core regularly. For a list of recommended exercises, check out my post on the 5 EXERCISES THAT ARE GUARANTEED TO STRENGTH YOUR CORE.
Now that you’ve corrected the imbalance you need to ensure that your hip flexion movement is strong and efficient. One of the best exercises to perform to achieve this is THE SUPINE KNEE TO ELBOW TOUCH – which you can read all about HERE. For most people, today’s world sees an increased amount of hours spent indoors sitting on our backsides. Sidebending right through the lower back will result in shortening of the muscles on this side and lengthening of the opposite side (namely quadratus lumborum a€“ see below).
This reates increased pressure around the left sit bone, and can irritate some of the muscles inserting here (eg hamstrings), or the bursa (a fluid filled sac) or even the sciatic nerve as it passes through this region and courses down the back of the leg.
It also elongates the piriformis muscle and some of the deep rotators of the hip, that act like a cuff and aid in hip stability.
Elevation of the right leg to place over the left will create shortening of the right hip flexors (psoas major and iliacus), it will also elongate the hamstrings muscles at the back of the thigh.
Taking the right knee across the midline will create shortening of the right adductors and lengthening of the muscles at the outside of the leg. The message would seem pretty clear: to avoid unnecessary back, pelvic or hip pain and unwanted muscle imbalances, uncross your legs.
Hip arthritis usually occurs as the result of an injury or inflammation caused to the hip joint, which causes a breakage in the cartilage tissues surrounding the region.

The cartilage –a rubbery and firm material covering the ends of the hip bone is made of proteins and water.
Hip pain can also be linked to a hip injury which had taken place earlier in the patient’s life. If the hip has suffered from any fracture earlier on, then it also leads to a change in the alignment of the hip. Not all causes of hip pain and back problems are related to injury or alignment factors connected with the hip. Certain changes in the subchondral bone may trigger off changes in the linings of the articular cartilage.
One of other primary causes connected with the incidence of hip pain is connected with vascular necrosis- which leads to degeneration in the hip joint. Proper diagnosis of the symptoms of hip arthritis helps in timely medical intervention and treatment of pack problems and hip pain.
At Advanced Healthcare, our team of doctors and healthcare professionals take a whole body approach to finding the true cause of your back pain.  Our unique approach allows us to integrate the best procedures from physical medicine, chiropractic, physical therapy and functional medicine to achieve optimal results. Structural misalignments in the spine can cause irritation to joints and muscles that weaken your body leading to acute injuries and chronic pain. Muscles can become tight and tender from chronic postural stress, abnormal repetitive movements and injuries. Digestive and internal organ stress and dysfunction can cause back and neck pain.  For example, improper digestion of fats and proteins can create stress to the gall bladder which can lead to upper back and neck pain.
Chronic constipation, which is having bowel movement less than once per day, can create lower back pain. Emotional and mental stress can create overall tightness in the muscles that will cause chronic tightness and soreness. If you are continuing to have problems and symptoms and you are not getting answers, then stop being frustrated! Call Advanced Healthcare of the Palm Beaches at 561-232-3553 to schedule a complimentary consultation. If you have one or more of these symptoms, (or have suffered from them in the past) then this is the blog post for you! This intervention will not only help with all of the above symptoms, but it will also make your overall movement more efficient and have positive impact on your performance.
However when the transverse abdominis, (aka your deeper core muscles) stops working properly—which can occur after a lower back injury—the psoas step up to cover the difference. This is what causes excessive tightness in your outer anterior hip and deep posterior-lateral region, in addition to a shortening of your IT band – which can then lead to lateral knee pain. If you have any questions about hip flexor pain or anything else listed within this post please don’t hesitate to come see me at the BIM studio, or comment below.

What this will do is help prevent these areas from engaging when trying to focus on contracting the weakened areas that you need to regain strength and function to. Many people, either through comfort or habit, spend some of this time sitting cross-legged. Sidebending right also increases the load on the joints between the vertebrae on the right side and stretches the joints and supporting structures (e.g. Be vigilant and use reminders a€“ a post it note on your computer screen may be all that it takes!
It usually occurs in the knees or the hips and causes swelling and pain among other symptoms. After the accident or injury to the hip joint, all changes in the alignment and movements of the hip lead to tear and wear to the surfaces of its joints. This leads to further degeneration, wear and tear and may cause fatal injuries and infections or bleeding in the joints.
The subchondral bone lies just below the articular cartilage and is protected by its presence. This brings about changes in the way the cartilage absorbs the shock impacts on the joints. In this instance, blood supply to the femoral head of the hip joint becomes scarce and leads to the complete degeneration of the joint. This is problematic because that then causes our body to rely on our psoas muscles for hip flexion, while they’re already working overtime acting as our primary core stabilizers. The high level of water content in the cartilage helps it to change its normal shape when compressed or influenced by an impact.
A history of hip osteoporosis in the patient’s family also makes him prone to higher risk of this skeletal condition and joint problem. Degeneration in the cushioning affect of this articular cartilage may lead to hip arthritis. The main causes behind AVN are connected with fractures, alcoholism and total dislocation of the hip. As the body ages and the elasticity in the cartilage become reduced, it sometimes fails to repair itself after degeneration and leads to the onset of hip arthritis.
It is also caused by long term cortisone treatment administered for other diseases and ailments.
