Personal Note from Dr. Nalini Chilkov

Dearest

Last month my dad had his 87th birthday.  I treasure one on one time with him and took him out to lunch, just the two of us. Happily there is a health food restaurant across the street from his office!!  I asked my father, a cancer survivor, what he wanted to leave as a legacy in terms of his values.  What do you want to pass on to your children and grandchildren? What is really important in life?

It took him some time to reflect.   The two values he came up with are authenticity, being fully yourself without pretense or posturing,  and generosity, helping others in need whether or not there is any reciprocity.  I realized that he had modeled both of these qualities to me for my entire life.   I will cherish these pearls as precious jewels in my life.  And I will forever remember this sweet conversation.   Why wait until our 80’s to clearly articulate to ourselves and our loved ones what really matters?   I encourage you to reflect upon your own core values and engage in this conversation with your friends, family and extended community.  What really matters to you?  Share your pearls on our  facebook page

Wishing You Hope, Health, Healing and Long Life!

Breaking News:  Invited to Join Cancer Schmancer Foundation Advisory Board

I am honored to have been invited to join the Advisory Board of Fran Drescher’s Foundation, Cancer Schmancer, devoted to early detection of women’s cancers by educating as well as making health care available to women who may not have access to screening exams. Why is this so important?? According to their website www.cancerschmancer.org:

“In the U.S. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. BUT THERE IS HOPE… Did you know when cancer is found early, 90% SURVIVE? Every woman, regardless of age, race or socioeconomic background deserves to have the opportunity of survival. We are fighting cancer a different way: CATCHING IT EARLY.”

It's Home Safety Month:  Let's "Trash Cancer"

July is Home Safety Month. One of Cancer Schmancer’s  many projects is called “Trash Cancer” which teaches you how to live a cleaner, less toxic, healthier life style by “trashing” everything in your home that is toxic to your health. They even encourage women to have “trash cancer parties” in which you “detox your home and have fun doing it!”

With Fran’s tremendous sense of humor and love of life and celebrity support, the spirit of giving and doing is pretty contagious!! Go ahead throw out that shampoo that contains parabens. Get rid of any Styrofoam containers that contaminate food and read the label of any packaged foods filled with preservatives and artificial flavorings and colorings and get rid of them! Fran encourages you to challenge yourself!! July is Home Safety Month, so go through each room in your house and make it a non toxic place for you and your family.

It is truly an honor to participate in an organization that is making such a big difference and touching so many lives. I am especially moved by the trucks that travel to low income neighborhoods to provide free screenings to women who may be uninsured, have no time or money to have routine lifesaving women’s health exams such as pap smears and breast exams which save women’s lives.

Here Comes Summer!  Protect Your Eyes and Your Skin

Make sure you wear sunglasses, a hat and plenty of sunscreen. Sun exposure is the primary cause of cataracts and also damages the delicate retina of the eye which leads to macular degeneration. Both conditions are primary causes of impaired vision and blindness later in life. So be sure to protect your eyes.

Protect your skin. Choose a safe sunscreen that offers protection without hormone disruptors such as oxybenzone which is a synthetic estrogen that can penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream and act as a cancer promoter. Do not use products which contain Vitamin A, which may be labeled as retinyl palmitate or retinol. These creams may actually lead to more skin cancers!! Look for sunscreens that contain zinc oxide. Be sure to reapply your sunscreen often. To find sunscreens that provide protection with fewer unwanted ingredients go to the sunscreen database on the Environmental Working Group site where you can find reviews of hundreds of products and their safety profiles.

Recipes of the Month

July is Blueberry Month

Blueberries are one of the great anti-cancer super foods. Blueberries are a source of the potent phytochemical Pterostilbene, a relative of reservatrol.  The potent anti-oxidants in blueberries protect your DNA as well as your brain and your heart and support normal blood sugar control. Even more important blueberry plant chemicals can also alter the life cycle of cancer cells, leading to apoptosis or cell death which is the demise of a tumor cell!! Studies have shown that organically grown blueberries contain more active antioxidant plant chemicals.
