In contrast, diets that ranked poorly in this list were those that were overly restrictive or discouraged a particular food group.

The diet consists of foods that can be hunted and fished – such as meat and seafood – and foods that can be gathered – such as eggs, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices. It’s a regime based on the supposed eating habits of our hunter-gatherer ancestors during the paleolithic era, before the development of agriculture around 10,000 years ago. That means cereal grains including wheat, dairy, refined sugar, potatoes and salt – as well as anything processed – are strictly off the menu. The WeightWatchers plan is based on the ProPoints system, which gives a value to foods and drink based on protein, carbs, fat and fibre content. It is essentially a calorie-controlled diet, where you get a personal daily ProPoints allowance, which you can use how you like.
The weekly meetings and confidential weigh-ins provide support and extra motivation to encourage long-term behaviour change. The Slim-Fast diet is a low-calorie meal replacement plan for people with a BMI of 25 and over. The South Beach Diet is a low-GI diet originally developed for heart patients in the US. There are six flexible diet plans ranging from 415 calories to 1,500 calories or more a day, depending on your weight loss goal. The bars, soups, porridges and shakes can be used as your sole source of nutrition or together with low-calorie regular meals. There’s no calorie counting, no foods are banned, and you're still allowed the occasional treat. You can get support from fellow slimmers at weekly group meetings and follow an exercise plan to become gradually more active. The alkaline diet, whose celebrity fans reportedly include Gywneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston and Victoria Beckham, is based on the idea that our modern diets cause our body to produce too much acid. The diet recommends cutting back on acid-producing foods such as meat, wheat and other grains, refined sugar, dairy products, caffeine, alcohol and processed foods in favour of “alkaline foods”, which reduce the body’s acidity levels.

The next three phases of the plan see the gradual introduction of some fruit, veg and carbs, and eventually all foods.

Less of a structured diet than an approach to eating, nutritionist Barbara Rolls’ Volumetrics diet has its followers make food choices based on their energy density and hunger-fighting attributes. Five percent of Americans identify as full-bore vegetarians, but 7 percent—23 million—say they are guided by a “vegetarian-inclined” diet.
Much attention has been given in recent years to the diet of residents of the Mediterranean world, which emphasizes healthy fats such as olive oil, lean proteins, and unprocessed carbohydrates such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.
This diet is about developing patterns for eating and living that you’ll follow for life—not only a few weeks. Developed by the National Institutes of Health’s National Cholesterol Education Program to combat heart disease, the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes diet combines a sharp reduction in fat (especially saturated fat) and cholesterol consumption with daily calorie maximums.
Along with a balanced approach to the inclusion of all food groups, these diets also encourage fruit and vegetable consumption, healthier unsaturated fats from fish and oils and a limited amount of saturated fat. Such restrictive diets can not only be difficult to adhere to, but also may lead to nutrient deficiencies. During this phase, you’re on a protein, fat and very low-carb diet, including meat, seafood, eggs, cheese, some veg, butter and oils. The plan recommends three snacks a day from an extensive list, including crisps and chocolate, two meal replacement shakes or bars and one regular meal, taken from a list of recipes on the Slim-Fast website. We’re concerned that this diet promises such a large weight loss, up to 13lb, in the first two weeks. Divided into two sections, “Lose it!” and “Live it!,” Mayo has dieters focus first on adding a healthy breakfast, lots of fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and a half hour of physical activity. It ranked highly in heart-healthy diets and healthy eating and broke the top 10 for easiness to follow. 3 among heart-healthy diets), DASH has both a simple goal and somewhat simple means by which to reach it: achieve your target weight by eating the foods you’ve always been told to emphasize while cutting out the ones we’ve grown to love. At the same time, you’re supposed to cut out television, sugar, snacking, excess meat and dairy, and eating out.
