Whether you're a weekend warrior, desk jocky or professionl athlete, we have many encouraging success stories of people recovering from shoulder pain. Injuries such as rotator cuff tears, impingement syndrome, tendonitis and frozen shoulder are resolving quickly and permanently, without surgery! Do something about your shoulder pain now and get back to an active and pain free lifestyle. The rotator cuff is a collection of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder, giving it support and allowing a wide range of motion. Rheumatoid arthritis: A form of arthritis in which the immune system attacks the joints, causing inflammation and pain. Gout: A form of arthritis in which crystals form in the joints, causing inflammation and pain.
Shoulder impingement: The acromion (edge of the scapula) presses on the rotator cuff as the arm is lifted.
Shoulder dislocation: The humerus or one of the other bones in the shoulder slips out of position.
Shoulder bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa, the small sac of fluid that rests over the rotator cuff tendons. Fibromyalgia is not always easy to diagnose because symptoms vary from person to person, many of the symptoms mimic those of other disorders, there are no visible signs of the disorder that a physician can see, and there is no definitive laboratory test for fibromyalgia. Tender points are sometimes incorrectly referred to as 'trigger points,' which is terminology that is used to describe a situation whereby pressing on certain trigger points can initiate a sequence of symptoms. Patient education is an important first step in helping patients understand and cope with the diverse symptoms. The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and, because of its extensive range of motion, it’s susceptible to injury and pain. Pain that does not go away or pain that occurs with every activity indicates that the key tissues are irritated enough that they are sending pain signals even without motion. Fortunately most of the torn tissue problems in the shoulder can be repaired under a local block with an arthroscope as an outpatient procedure.
The shoulder joint is formed where the humerus (upper arm bone) fits into the scapula (shoulder blade), like a ball and socket. Fibromyalgia tender points, or pressure points, are commonly found around the elbows, shoulders, knees, hips, back of the head, and the sides of the breastbone and are typical signs of fibromyalgia.

Because many medical conditions can cause pain in different areas of the body, your doctor may still want to do blood tests or X-rays to rule out illnesses that mimic fibromyalgia. Since symptoms are diverse and vary among patients, treatment programs must be individualized for each patient. Tricyclic antidepressants appear to reduce fatigue, relieve muscle pain and spasm, and promote deep, restorative sleep in patients with fibromyalgia. The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), while very helpful in treating other rheumatic conditions, have only a limited value in treating fibromyalgia pain.
People use it to treat pain of pressure points, back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, and pain from musculoskeletal injuries.
It can also improve circulation and range of motion and boost production of natural painkillers. While the shoulder is not thought of as a weight bearing joint, once you lift an object or roll over at night, the forces going through the shoulder joint exceed those of most joints due to the long lever arm of the outstretched arm.
The four tendons that make up the rotator cuff and the biceps tendon, (the combined musculature that drives the shoulder motions) can be inflamed by activities such as throwing, shooting basketballs, and lifting bags over head.
Pain radiating down the arm or up to the neck or to the back are also worrisome for injuries not just in the shoulder but sometimes of the neck. But fibromyalgia can (like arthritis) cause significant pain and fatigue, and it can similarly interfere with a person's ability to carry on daily activities. Narcotic pain relievers are typically avoided in fibromyalgia patients because they have not been shown to be beneficial and have potential adverse side effects, including dependency, when used long term. Chiropractic may be effective for fibromyalgia because it helps improve pain levels and increases cervical and lumbar ranges of motion. When patients have accompanying irritable bowel syndrome, the diet should be adjusted to not aggravate the bowels.
Studies have shown that adding fluoxetine (Prozac), or related medications, to low-dose amitriptyline further reduces muscle pain, anxiety, and depression in patients with fibromyalgia.
The bursitis is filled with inflammatory components that irritate the nerve fibers sending pain signals to the brain. A full tear of the rotator cuff often will present with night pain, since when you roll over you push the arm up into the socket through the rotator cuff tear. Likewise, when patients have accompanying interstitial cystitis, foods that irritate the bladder should be avoided.

Formal studies of the effects of massage on fibromyalgia symptoms are few and results are mixed.
Pain radiating down the arm or up to the neck can sometimes be from the discs in the neck or the nerves at the front of the shoulder called the brachial plexus.
Sometimes, changes in environmental factors (such as noise, temperature, and weather exposure) can exacerbate the symptoms of fibromyalgia, and these factors need to be modified. However, researchers at the University of Miami’s Touch Research Institute report that just 20 minutes of moderate-pressure massage can lessen the flow of chemicals associated with pain and stress while increasing production of serotonin. Exercises to strengthen posture are also commonly used by our physical therapists to fix mild shoulder irritations. Often we see throwers with slight errors in their throwing mechanics or golfers with swing abnormalities that bring on the problems, and correction of the swing fixes the pain.
Instability of the shoulder, with the shoulder popping in or out of the joint is another area that is best treated with early repair of the torn ligaments.
Shoulder bursitis is often accompanied by tendinitis of tendons adjacent to the affected bursa in the shoulder. If learned properly, electronic biofeedback can help you control your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing patterns, and muscle tension, potentially reducing pain. Slumping at your desk, reaching for your mouse, hunching over your keyboard, can all put extra strain on the shoulder, neck or back and may be the cause of your shoulder pain. We avoid cortisone as there is clear evidence that it weakens the tissues of the shoulder if used too frequently.
These neurotransmitters stimulate or inhibit nerve impulses in the brain that relay information about external stimuli and sensations such as pain. Stand with your shoulders at or behind your hips with your belly button tucked in and notice the difference.
It can also cause a "pinching" pain when the elbow is moved away from the body, referred to as an "impingement" sign.
