January 18, 2012 By Mindi 21 Comments As somebody who is actually following the Les Mills Pump program, I feel pretty qualified to review each of the workouts and I will continue to do so until I’ve done all of them. Pump Challenge is the very first workout in the series and Pump and Burn is the second Pump workout in the program.

I love this advice because there are so many programs and people out there who are afraid to lift heavy or advise others to lift heavy. One of the trainers in this workout is also in Pump Challenge but the others are all different and they’re all great.
With a traditional weightlifting set, you perform a certain number of reps and then rest (as in no resistance at all). Since there are so many reps involved with this workout, there are a few rest periods where you set the bar down and recover for a few seconds. I feel that Pump and Burn is more of a challenge but I get why they included Pump Challenge and am happy they did. The deluxe version comes with a couple extra plates, a few extra workouts and also a step with 4 risers. I was hesitant about him trying it because he likes to lift heavy weights and has never followed a dvd program, but he’s actually really liking it! You can add more weight to make them more difficult, yes, but they’re still pretty basic and not a true full-body workout like the rest of the Pump DVDs are. I’m a big fan of adding resistance to my ab exercises, so combine that fact with some new moves and I was in heaven.
This puts the fear in people’s minds that they will get bulky and can therefore get by with using very light weight without ever needing to add resistance. I found this to be tremendously helpful and it helps you rest up just enough to get through the next set. Pump Challenge is kind of an introduction to the program and teaches you proper form for various exercises (AND make it a workout) while Pump and Burn turns the notch up a bit.
