There are 7 cervical vertebrae (neck bones) that make up the 'cervical spine' or the neck area of your spine. This diagram nicely illustrates some of the problems that can occur in the neck, causing symptoms in the arm. As you can see from the image below, problems at certain levels of the cervical vertebrae can lead to typical patterns of referred pain in the shoulder, arm or hand areas. As physios, with our in depth knowledge of anatomy we are able to identify such patterns from our thorough assessment, which enables us to identify where your problem is coming from and subsequently target our treatment at that area. Most people have heard of sciatica, and this is exactly the same concept - except sciatica comes from a problem in your lumbar spine and affects your sciatic nerve, giving you pain & symptoms in your leg.
If you have a pain or other symptoms (such as pins & needles or numbness) in your arm, shoulder or hand it may be that the root cause of the problem is your neck. Severe pain in left shoulder and arm with tingling in fingersWhat could this be that leaves me in so much pain in my left shoulder blade and goes down my left arm that hurts in the upper left arm and comes down to my left elbow and down my arm to my fingers that leaves it tingling.
You visited this chiropractic help site no doubt because you have a problem that is not resolving and want to know more about what chiropractors do.

They may at first be confused when one of the things we start looking at and questioning about is their neck.
At the top (C1) it joins with your skull and at the bottom (C7) it joins into your thoracic vertabrae (which is the part of your spine that connects with your ribs).

There are little discs in between vertebrae and nerves run out at every level going down into your shoulder, arm & hand. However, should a problem develop in your neck, this may present itself as a pain in your arm. These include degeneration or 'wear & tear' of the bones (also known as spondylosis), problems with the disc and compression on the nerves. These patterns of 'referred pain' relate to each nerve that comes out from each level of the cervical spine. I also have what feels like muscle spasms in my upper chest just the left side.Hello,There are unfortunately several possibilities, from a slipped disc in the neck, to a first rib subluxation or a "cervical rib" that is affecting the group of nerves going down the arm.
However, as the diagram below nicely illustrates, problems in the neck can often present themselves as symptoms in the arm.
And so the day goes; chiropractors shouldn't be treating the elderly most medical sites state but that's so much bunkum.
Described by a reader as gems, both funny and healthful, from the life and work of a chiropractor, you'll love them. After seven treatments his pain and stiffness is 50 percent better, and he's happy in the circumstances.
Mr P is 32 year old man with very severe lower back pain radiating to the big toe which is 30 percent numb. He had an episode three weeks ago, took anti inflammatories and was soon better as is typical of the medial disc herniation. The characteristic crossed sign was evident; sitting in a chair, straightening the right leg provoked severe left back pain and tingling in the leg. It's called the postero lateral disc hernia; she's much better after two weeks of treatment and will go back to work next week, part time.

He has a pincer deformity in the hip causing the groin pain, and a degenerative facet causing the sciatica.
Mr T is a wise man; he's taken a warning TIA seriously and has lost 15 pounds, and has at least as much again to lose. A change to a low starch diet and half hour daily walk has made the difference; but the walking is making his foot and back miserable. The expensive orthotic is hopeless; luckily his hips and back are fine, but he needs a simple heel lift.
I too have had serious lower back issues, luckily fixed by my own chiropractor; so I too have to do my exercises, take care when lifting supers full of honey, gardening and using the chainsaw. This 65 year old lady is a serious gardener; every day she is bending, lifting and digging for 2 to 3 hours a day. With a nasty scoliosis she manages very well with a chiropractic adjustment every six weeks and exercises faithfully done. Mr X is a 71 year old retired man who wants to continue with maintenance care every six to eight weeks; he had suffered from two years of lower back pain when he first came a year ago. Mr D is a 38 old year man with chronic shoulder pain after a rotator cuff tear playing cricket.
It responded well to treatment, but he knows he must do his exercises every day; for two years he couldn't sleep on that shoulder.
