2 way switching means having two or more switches in different locations to control one lamp. Here we have a two way switching system that utilises two single gang two-way switches and a three wire control, shown in the new harmonised cable colours. Here we a have a schematic (Fig 1) which makes it easy to visualise how this circuit works.
The schematic is nice and simple to visualise the principal of how a two way switch works but is little help when it coms to actually wiring this up in real life!!
Fig 2 below shows how we achieve this configuration. Just like any loop-in loop-out radial circuit, the switch cable from the ceiling rose contains two wires, a permanent live and a switched live.
I may be getting this wrong but looks to me that the blue core on cable C and the black core on D would be permanent live. Hi, I’m adding another switch to the lighting circuit in my utility room and ive split what was a triple gang one way switch for lights, outside light and extractor fan to a one gang two way and a 2 gang one way.
Yes Michael – you just need to introduce intermediate switch into a two way switching setup (sometimes called three-way switching or two-way plus intermediate).
I am replacing my switches one of my old switches has 4 cables and 4 connections however my new 1 gang 2 way switch only has 3 connections . So if I understand you correctly, this is not 2 way switching and both lights work but it is the switch position you wish to change. Hi, tried to replace my hall light which is operated by the switch in the hall only, but is a two way switch operating the landing light, which is a one way switch. I have 2 way switching in my bedroom, it seemed to work ok with standard filament bulbs but I have now swapped over to LED and have noticed a problem. I have bought a single gang PIR to automatically turn on a hallway light but the light is also independently switched on and off in another switch behind it… The new PIR has a COM and L1 port and the existing has a wire in COM, L1 and L2… Can I assume L2 is rage communication between the second switch and therefore place the wire from COM to COM on the PIR and the wire from L1 to L1 on the PIR, can the L2 wire be left loose or could I add that to L1 on the PIR? Sometime ago, thinking the upstairs hall light was off, I discoved the light bulb had a small glow.
Hi I have a new 2way light switch which does not have a com on it,how would I go about switching it over?.
I’m confused as to why they are identically wired and have a 3 and 4 core in both switches.
Earthing metal switch faceplates – your diagrams only suggest this for one of the switches; surely it should be for both! There is a note on the diagram regarding earthing metal face plates and the earth loop shown on one of the switches illustrates this.
I ran a typical loop in loop out radial to each rose and brought the master (4 gang) strappers back individually from each of the single 2 way switches.
I double checked my wiring and confirmed that each set of switches are wiring indentically, 3 wiring, 2 way arrangement. Hello, quick question, does the three core and earth loop in and out of multiple lights, reason I ask is I have 2 single gang 2 way lights switches and 3 lights, all the diagrams show is B to the next light but not the 2 way control?
Fan wiring is really easy if you follow the wiring diagram on the manufacturers installation instructions because each fan is a little different. The most important thing about a ceiling fan is that it needs to be connected to a strong light box. If I'm understanding you correctly this fan only has a black and white wire that will connect to the incoming power. A lot of remote fans are like this and you wire the black and white to the remote receiver then the reciever to the fan and light.

Since you are dealing with a built-in remote fan, there is no blue wire to deal with, so you may have to disregard earlier posts that include instructions for a 3-wire fan setup. Another solution here is to buy a 2nd transmitter, and mount it on the wall at the other end of the room, and forget trying to make this thing work with a 3-way switch. Ceiling fans are nothing short of a blessing especially in rooms or areas of your home where air conditioning is not possible.
Carefully climb a ladder and take a hold of the power supply cable emerging emerging from the outlet.
Connect the power supply wires to the leads emerging from the ceiling fan’s motor by twisting them together. They are wired so that operation of either switch will control the light. This arrangement is often found in stairways, with one switch upstairs and one switch downstairs or in long hallways with a switch at either end. It is possible to achieve a similar result using a two wire control which, although it saves on cable, is not recommended. In this state the lamp is off, changing the position of either switch will switch the live to the lamp turning it on.
I’ve run 2 cables between the main and new utility light switches as per the diagram. The hall light works fine.but the outside light is on when the switch is in the off position and vice versa. When I took the old hall light down, the three red wires were joined together, the three earth wires joined together but only two of the three black wires were joined, one remained isolated. If you’d mentioned this method of wiring I could have taken the faceplate off one of the switches before I spent an hour lifting flooring in the loft hunting for non-existent junction boxes.
The downstairs light is controlled by two switches, one at main door, the other(x) near the back of house. Eventually the bulb blew, having replaced it, I now find the two switches don’t talk to each other. The radial covers 4 office rooms and required a single 2 way switch in each office and a master 4 gang switch by the main door.
Upon performing a functional test, each set of switches worked fine until I got to the last set. Twin and earth wiring is required for all installations except those using a double wall control. However, If in doubt with any part of the installation procedure then please contact a qualified electrician. Heating and cooling bills can be reduced simply by installing ceiling fans that help move the air.
It helps to know this in advance when building a new home so you can reinforce the light box in the ceiling when doing the framing. Still there are light boxes that you can install after the ceiling has been sheetrocked. There are fans with remote controls that make it so much easier to control the speed and lighting if they include a light. So you'll have a single pole double throw three way switch at your two locations but the fan speed and light intensity have to be controlled from the remote. You need to be able to switch power to the lights from the 3 way switches and have power to the remote to operate the fan. Understand that you will have control of the fan and light with the remote with a switch on.

The most important thing you will need to do is interrupt the flow of electricity to the power outlet from where you will supply current to the ceiling fan. When you have pulled out the wires, you will need to screw the downrod into the motor housing by hand. Use a utility knife to peel away about 6 inches of the cable sheathing and thus reveal the bare copper wires. The hook to which you attach the motor will temporarily hold the motor sideways so that you can easily wire the ceiling fan without having to worry about supporting the weight while you are working. Be sure to take the colour coding in to account as you will have to connect white to white, black to black and bare copper to copper.
However, my Cable A (live supply) has always come directly into the original triple switch not to the first spot in the sequence.
Attempted to put the new light up with all red wiring into the minibloc, all earth into the minibloc and all black into the minibloc, result- blown fuse. Managed to figure out how to control 3 lights in one room with intermediate switches on the desk and bedside lamp from your diagrams. By that I mean, one will switch on, but the other switch won’t turn it off and visa versa.
The single 2 way switch did switch on the light and would only allow the 4 gang switch to operate if the L1 of the 2 gang switch was open. I have bought a new touch switch that has only L1 and L2 which I would like to use upstairs, which is the switch with the two lives connected together L2 and the switch lives connected together out of L1. Typically, lightboxes with heavy fans need to be installed between two ceiling studs for strength. If you are not confident at working with electrical appliances, it will be wise to hire an electrician for this task.
To make the process easier, peel away the top sheathing and then treat each individual insulated wire. Obviously one shouldn’t work live anyway but the switched lives should be correctly sheathed. Leaving a switch on will allow you to operate the light or fan or both thru the receiver with the remote. However, if you have the skills and some basic knowledge about electricity, wiring a ceiling fan can be easy. Just to be sure, use a non-contact circuit tester to check for flashes or chirps which in turn indicate the flow of electricity through the circuit.
Slowly twist wire nuts in a clockwise direction onto each of the wire pairings and complete the process by folding the pairs into the junction box.
I’m thinking the Cable A brown is permanently live therefore should go into Main switch L1, is that correct, and, if so where can I connect the neutral??from your image, it looks like it should go somehow directly to the first spot, but running a cable to connect it is not really feasible without cutting into my newly plastered ceiling and walls.
One the other hand as long as one switch or the other is in the 'on' position you can have control of the fan and light with the remote.
