I get a lot of emails from readers and as you may imagine, some of them slide into the creepy category, several are just dudes being dudes, and of course, there’s the occasional hate letter.
Alternate, alternate, alternate translation: I competed as a junior golfer and played sucky college golf. To promote Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, along with the new official commercial, EA SPORTS debuted its online video series, a€?Team Sports Meets Golf,a€? showcasing Tiger and other golf dudes attempting shots in unexpected team sports settings like basketball, hockey, football, soccer and curling. Today, we have Tiger (and Rickie Fowler) assisted by some guys with tremendous broom skills, sweeping in the Americans for the win. Welcome to Balls in the Air, where I size up my Fantasy Golf picks of the week, featuring guys to watch (or not) and interesting story lines.
Robert Allenby: His first start since playing for second at The Players after he felt his chances to win were quashed when he left his birdie putt short on 17.
Tim Clark: Because grumpy Intern Kevin thinks Tim Clark is like the greatest player alive other than Lee Westwood. So, the point is, nothing has really changed aside from the occasional question about the stress of his personal life and the-awful-thing-that-happened-six-months-ago-but-we’re-not-going-to-call-it-his-sex-scandal-at-least-to-his-face.
Yeah, thrusting his body at the ball probably doesn’t lend to getting the club in front as easily. Tomorrow, Tiger tees off at 12:44 with Steve Stricker and Jason Bohn, who he was actually playing with before withdrawing at The Players. Battling injuries, Singh fell out of the top 50 in the world rankings — which are exempt from qualifying. Vijay Singh, who has recorded three victories in golfa€™s Major Championships, has accepted a special exemption from qualifying for the 2010 U.S. Singh, a native of Fiji who won the 1998 and 2004 PGA Championships as well as the 2000 Masters Tournament, has competed in 16 U.S. Speaking to the press on Tuesday at The Memorial, tournament host Jack Nicklaus said there were times he wished he would have played harder to expand the gap between his majors record and the man who is now chasing it — Tiger Woods, of course. If and when Tiger does break the 18 major championship mark, Nicklaus does have one small request for him. I know I took some shots at Mark Calcavecchia last week, but the man made me smile today — because of a story PGA Tour rookie Chris Wilson shared with me on Tuesday. Both Wilson and Calc have close ties with the Columbus, OH, community, where this week’s Memorial Invitational is being played. Wilson and Calc popped by the Nationwide Children’s Hospital to visit with some patients in the head and neck rehab center. The two spent two hours chatting with the kids, along with playing Nintendo Wii and putting with them on a mini-putting green.
When they dropped by one patient’s room, Wilson presented the girl with an autographed hat. Naturally, I chose to wear a white polo and didn’t bring a jacket or umbrella, so basically I looked like I was participating in a wet T-shirt contest at Spring Break in Cancun or something. Good thing the two singles we were paired with each had a cart, so we hopped on and drove as fast as golf carts go to the clubhouse. It’s really incredible how much more distance you get when you ditch your driver from the stone ages (my TaylorMade 320i from crica 1999) and play with a club equipped with that newfangled technology.
And in the picture above, no, I was not picking my nose nor was I wiping allergens from it. Damon Hack wrote an excellent story on 16-year-old Jordan Spieth, who made big headlines when he placed T16 at the Byron Nelson Championship a few weeks ago, and the role the AJGA plays in preparing teens for the college and pro ranks. I enjoyed the article because, well, Damon is an excellent writer who always captures his subject very well and Spieth is a fascinating story, but I particularly liked it because it reminded me of the fond memories I had playing in the AJGA, which helped me receive college scholarship offers (even though I turned them down for Yale eventually). It’s the night before the Thunderbird International Junior, the big kahuna of the American Junior Golf Association season, and Jordan Spieth is in a banquet hall, hopping up and down on his right leg. I think the card thing is new, but the AJGA was always tough on pace of play, never hesitating to put groups on the clock. The primary mission of the AJGA is to set the juniors on a path for obtaining college scholarships, and that is another area of strength.
I’m still grateful to the AJGA for providing me with the opportunities to compete on the highest junior level. Before I rush to the airport (and pray I make my flight), please treat this as your weekend open thread. The concept that will be presented at the PAC meeting is called a€?Designated Tournaments,a€™a€™ according to a memo sent to players and agents, a copy of which was obtained by Golfweek.
For example, this proposal may mandate that the top 50 players on the PGA Tour money list play at least one of five selected events, likely events that have struggled to attract top-ranked players.
I mean, Veege sounds like he’s even more fun to work for than the awful wench I sweat blood for as a first-year private equity analyst.
I’d like to give Natalie the benefit of the doubt and blame the typo on a spellcheck correction. Golfweek’s Jeff Rude recently played a round at Dallas National Golf Club and it just so happened that President George W. During one posed shot I took of Bush and a friend, I said, a€?Looks good.a€? He playfully shot back, a€?No it doesna€™t. After he scuffed a chip just short of the green, he looked at me and said, a€?Therea€™s mud on my ball. The hardcore golf geeks probably know that last year Phil helped design a Callaway hybrid, which he played with at the US Open.
Welcome to Balls in the Air, where I size up my Fantasy Golf picks of the week, featuring guys to watch (or not) and interesting story lines. A After a pseudo-one-week respite, I’m back to make my totally arbitrary informed Fantasy picks. Similar to the deal with Scratch Golf, along with wearing TRUE linkswear’s shoes, Moore, famed for playing sponsor-less golf in 2009, is now also a part owner of the company.
I have been in 20 years, and before 2003, i don't seem to recall any where near the support that we have today from the general public. As you may recall, a few spectators got in the way of Tiger’s errant drives during the final round of The Memorial.
Teeing up from the championship tees, Marky Mark, the highest handicap in the foursome, was the only one to break 100, firing a 97. Meanwhile, apparently if Tony Romo and Drew Brees were to face off on the links, Romo would dominate. While Ference didn’t meet her goal of breaking 100, she celebrated small victories during her round, such as when she cleared the 150-yard chasm on the eighth hole to stay dry. I saw some criticisms on Twitter over how poorly she was playing, but seriously, guys, what do you expect?
The Palm Beach Post reports that John Daly, who often gripes about his financial turmoil via Twitter, is suing the Honda Classic and its beneficiaries, including a children’s charity, for a rib injury he sustained while playing in the event in 2007.
Daly filed the suit after a woman taking pictures jumped in front of him in mid-swing, which caused him to abruptly stop his swing because he feared harming or even killing the woman. Oh, wait until you take a look at the complaint, which reads almost like parody (see document below). On the third occasion, John Daly’s agent told security the patron was security risks. I sympathize with those who suffer from recurring injury and usually come to their defense. Welcome to Balls in the Air, where I size up my Fantasy Golf picks of the week, featuring guys to watch (or not) and interesting story lines. Ben Crane: The slowest player on the Tour has been creeping his way near the top of the leaderboard recently.
According to the AP, Jack and Annika have written a letter to the International Golf Federation asking to be the architects of the first Olympic golf course since over a century ago.
Meanwhile, Ty Votaw, who is leading the IGF until it hires a full-time director, said there’s a chance they would use an existing course.
I really enjoyed Alan Shipnuck’s story on snagging an invitation to play in the prestigious Swallows tournament, where the movers and shakers of the country, who happen to also be million-billionaires gather and schmooze.
So at long last I would get to experience the Swallows, but only as a double agent: both a starry-eyed former cart boy and a hawk-eyed reporter penetrating an event that no one, to my knowledge, had ever written about.
And he happened to be paired with actor Chris O’Donnell, the star of the hit show NCIS Los Angeles (oh, how the mighty have fallen).
Apparently Jimmy Fallon is really good at something pseudo-nerdy like Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11. On Monday he defended his title against Ian Poulter in the latest version of the game, which was released on Tuesday. Interestingly enough, because Justin Rose won The Memorial, England’s Simon Khan has been added to the US Open field.
On Wednesday the USGA announced that Khan, who finished as first alternate at the sectional qualifier in Surrey, England, has accepted the spot that became available because the winner of the Memorial had not won a PGA Tour co-sponsored event in the past twelve months. The USGA reserves two spots in the field for any player who won multiple PGA Tour co-sponsored events between June 21, 2009, and June 13, 2010.
Question now is if Green wins, does he accept the spot or pass it up to chill out on his couch? In the case Green doesn’t collect first place, then the first alternate from another qualifier gets in the field. The reallotment list (which we do not make public) would determine the next alternate should the double winner category not apply after Memphis.
Tiger Woods announced on Tuesday that he will return to Melbourne this November to defend his title at the Australian Masters a€” for the going rate of his $3 million appearance fee, half of which will be picked up by the Victorian government (again). The Aussies gave Tiger a grand welcome last year, where he enjoyed the adoration of thousands of fans who lined the fairways to catch a glimpse of the worlda€™s number-one golfer.

His return will be bittersweet as, it was in Melbourne that The National Enquirer caught the smoking gun that helped to ignite his sex scandal a€” mistress #1 Rachel Uchitel was seen at his hotel and later it was discovered that Team Tiger booked her travel. After Bubba Watson failed to make the US Open, he tweeted he made his first hole-in-one during the 36-hole sectional qualifier in Columbus, OH. According to Bubba’s scorecard, the hole-in-one came on the 150-yard 16th hole during his second round. Some would call his attitude realistic, others would regard it as defeatist and the rest would say it’s a big middle finger to the USGA.
Besides Tony Romo pulling out in Houston, perhaps the biggest news coming from Monday’s Sectional qualifiers is that Justin Rose, who won The Memorial a day earlier, failed to secure a trip to Pebble Beach next week. Courtesy of Intern Kevin’s hard work (who discovered Golfweek is doing basically the same thing I assigned him after the fact), here are the sectional qualifier results (will be updated as results become available).
Eric Axley, Stuart Appleby, Terry Pilkadaris, Bo Van Pelt, Brendan De Jonge, Tom Lehman (wow!), Ben Curtis, Hugo Leon, Alex Cekja, Aaron Baddeley, Harrison Frazar, Alex Martin (a), Davis Love III, Derek Lamely and John Mallinger. Hudson Swafford, Richard Barcelo, Deane Pappas, Mathias Gronberg, Paul Goydos, Morgan Hoffmann, David Frost, Shaun Micheel, J.J.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo’s quest to become the fourth professional athlete to qualify for the US Open was cut short on Monday. After the horn blew for the second time, Romo, who fired a first-round one-under 71, withdrew from the weather-delayed 36-hole US Open qualifier at The Club at Carlton Woods near Houston. With players set to finish their second rounds on Tuesday, Romo had to return to Dallas because he was obligated to return and practice with the Cowboys. In the first 18, he rebounded from a triple-bogey on the fourth hole to salvage his round, putting him four shots behind the leader, Casey Clendenon. Fear not, Romo-football fans, the man doesn’t have aspirations to become a dual-athlete a la Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders. Until the par-3 12th at The Memorial, it looked like Rickie Fowler, who entered Sunday with the 54-hole lead, would secure his first PGA Tour win. For the first half of the day, the 21-year-old rookie continued to dominate, but a bogey on the 10th and Justin Rose’s fine play, resulted in a share of the lead. But for those unaware, Rickie wears orange head-to-toe every Sunday to represent Oklahoma State, where he attended for two years before turning pro last fall. In related news, Rickie played at the 36-hole US Open Sectional qualifier in Columbus, OH, today.
Darryl Strawberry showed up to Yankees Stadium dressed like Tiger Woods to watch a boxing match on Saturday night.
So, if you’re a nonprofit organization, register now and sell tickets to benefit your cause.
The 21-year old rookie fired a six-under 66 for a two-day total of 13-under, tying the 36-hole record at Memorial set by Scott Hoch in 1987. Meanwhile Tiger Woods shot three-under 69 with six birdies and three bogeys to easily make the cut.
Hmm…I wonder what Colin Montgomerie and Tiger Woods are whispering about in this picture.
The European Ryder Cup captain confessed to his wife Gaynor that he had an affair with a former neighbor and lover, Joanne Baldwin. If you have a problem with your Safari or Astro van where the blower motor is working but the air will only come out of the defroster no matter where you place the selector switch, you likely have a vacuum leak. I am looking to redo my kids playroom and looking for more storage, where did you get those white cabinets? A mother of five, who enjoys sharing her love of all things creative in hopes of inspiring other women and families. But more often than not, I’m entertained by some of the more off-beat notes (like this one) and humbled by those who have kind words.
If you’d like to use that money for a much more interesting trip you could join me and some friends who areA  going to St. It was like a relaxed, fun preview of 10 marquee players in The Memorial dueling for skins — I mean, because from what I could tell, the guys were taking it really seriously. Who knows which Phil will come out to play, but if you want to buy into the theory that Phil steps up his game when Tiger is in the field, then here we go. I find them morbidly entertaining and occasionally I actually glean something new and thought-provoking. But his swing looked much better in the skins game today — even if he was just messing around and having fun. Sometimes it’s best simply to get back to the fundamentals without someone in your ear preaching their controversial swing theories.
Tiger, in regards to the neck, it seems like you didn’t really understand what was going on with that.
No way!), several of Lee’s competitors just happened to notice she was getting more spin out of the wet rough than the other players.
And the other wedges remained an enigma, too — neither appear on the good or bad list.
The USGA, known to be merciless with granting special exemptions to the US Open, has given Vijay Singh, who was scheduled to play in next Monday’s sectional qualifier, a pass to play at Pebble Beach. His best finish this year was a T4 at the Honda Classic and in thirteen starts he’s had five MCs and a WD. The rookie is the hometown boy and the veteran, who is making his final start on the PGA Tour, met his wife Brenda, a Columbus native, in 2001 at the event. I think I hit around 12 greens, but unfortunately, I was hitting six to twelve footers like Sergio — missing every single one of them.
In fact, the horserace at the 2000 (or maybe 2001?) AJGA Trophy Lake Championship remains one of my favorite golfing memories. The organization is a stickler for maintaining a good pace of play, with timing stations placed on every third hole and golfers given a red card if their group falls out of position. With all due respect to high school golf, that’s not where most of us stepped up our games or looked to receive the attention from national college coaches. The fact that the Deepwater Horizon leak is 5,000 feet below the surface of the ocean is thought to be the reason the technique did not succeed. I mean, without my clubs — and besides exploring the town, which will probably take, oh, I dunno, 20 minutes tops — what am I going to do all weekend by myself in northwest Florida? When questioned about the initiatives outlined in the memo, Goydos told Golfweek that the concept would involve designating a handful of events each year and mandating that top players play in at least one of those targeted events. A 16-year-old Jordan Spieth playing well and placing T16 basically saved the tournament by creating some real interest.
I mean, if Sergio Garcia, Steve Stricker, Tim Clark and Matt Kuchar playing in five struggling events keeps sponsors happy, then that’s fantastic. Sure, Tiger has 14 major championships and Nike has implemented his ideas into the design of some clubs, but can he call himself a club inventor? He just needs to win the Colonial, which is entirely possible — he won the event when he last played in 2008.
Seriously, though, he’s wearing pink this week and how can you not pick a guy who’s sporting pink?!
After finishing T2 and closing with a smooth 63 last week, he’s probably feeling pretty good.
Since his fantastic performance at The Masters, where he finished T4, he’s fizzled out in his last few starts. On Wednesday it was announced that Moore has signed a three-year contract with TRUE linkswear to sport its shoes and committed to invest in the new Dallas-based apparel and footwear company. We have more support now that theres a war on, but once that ends, we will go back to being the un clean we were before. Kipling wrote a poem, Tommy Atkins, and i think thats as relevent now as it was when he penned it. Spent plenty of time bouncing round Salisbury Plain and the parie in canada in the back of 432's and warriors. The guy who was whacked on the first hole has apparently achieved some sort of fame (15 minutes!) and went on a radio show in Sacramento to talk about his painful experience.
I mean, groundbreaking that Tiger actually took the time to speak with the fan and sign a glove.
Brees, a 3-handicap, opened the round by hitting his first drive on the roof of the spa bordering the hole. The 51-year-old amateur had a rough time reaching most of the fairways from the back tees and shot 118. He’s asking for $100 million in damages, claiming that the recurring pain has permanently harmed his game. After the third time, security came to the hole where Plaintiff John Daly was about to drive.
He won the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines earlier this year and in his past three starts, he has three top-tens to show for them.
There’s also the argument that PGA Tour players make too much money, which have made them complacent.
James Driscoll and Olin Browne, whose daughter is Rickie Fowler’s girlfriend, were the other known names that failed to advance. According to the Golf Channel, Compton has had two heart transplants and Pebble Beach will be his first appearance at a major championship. 16-year-old Jordan Spieth, who made headlines by placing T16 at the Byron Nelson Championship, also didn’t advance. His brother is Michael Putnam, who plays on the Nationwide Tour and who I know from Washington Junior Golf — we also had the same swing coach, Joe Thiel.
When the players were called in the second time, Romo had played three holes, which included an opening quadruple-bogey.

It’s not easy to win a playoff to make the sectional qualifying for the US Open, let alone after firing 68 to get into the situation.
It appears many viewers and readers were baffled by his decision to dress like a prison inmate (see here for the Rickie Fowler Sunday clothing line), which would have been completed with a ball and chain.
Here’s some information about one initiative designed to raise funds for local non-profit organizations during The Barclays, the first leg of the (thrilling) FedEx Cup playoffs. After spending several hours troubleshooting, and some additional help from Youtube, the problem turned out to not be that difficult to fix. That is because we have been so busy tearing out and putting back together the flooring in the kitchen and our new office. But then it became one of the girls “props” to blow their hair back whilst dancing :)….Who doesn’t need one of those while dancing? I love how it slides out at the bottom for the kids but then I can put stuff higher and they can’t get. If anyone has tuned in to the Golf Channel for five seconds, you’ve probably seen him in some sort of trouble. When he missed that three-footer, Jack Nicklaus turned to Phil and uttered something indiscernible to me, but from the looks of it, he was thinking, WTF? Apparently his neck is feeling better after doing exercises and therapy that he doesn’t want to explain. He admitted to getting distracted with his new celebrity status after winning Quail Hollow last month, but now the buzz has settled and it’s back to business. His best finish was a tie for third in 1999 and he has finished in the top 10 on seven occasions.
Well, to put some perspective on what some feel is a major abomination, the USGA doled out an exemption to Aaron Baddeley in 2000. Well, my group and I were stupid and cut it pretty close today during our round (only my second of the year — sad!) at The Links at Union Vale in Lagrangeville, NY, today.
We went back out to the course, but it started pouring again for two and a half more holes. Back in my day (more than a decade ago!), we wrote letters to coaches telling them our schedules for the summer, hoping they would come watch us play if the event was in the area.
Otherwise, I have no problem laying out, taking naps, watching movies and maybe even reading, like a book. Unless Tiger is playing well on the weekend, I doubt it’d have a significant impact on the ratings. Otherwise, watching Day and Blake Adams dunk shots in the pond on the 72nd hole to battle for the win doesn’t appeal to a wide audience. Rude was playing ahead of Dubya, who eventually played through, noting the former president had an entourage of eight carts filled with men in black riding along for the day.
So, will the opportunity to pull ahead of Tiger as the world’s number one give him the right motivation to play well? After his big breakout win at The Barclays (almost a major!!!), he’s having a solid year with two top-ten finishes, including T4 at THE PLAYERS.
I was annoyed concerned because I started him on my fantasy golf and wondered what the story was behind the WD. If memory serves me right (it fails sometimes), Tiger bashed someone with a ball last year at the Buick Open or WGC-Bridgestone and didn’t even check if the fan was okay. According to the legal documents, this happened after Daly and others asked security three times to boot her from the course.
Prior to the drive, security guards took control of the patron that was the security risks, but did not remove her from the area and did not remove her from the course and let her go prior the incident.
Yes, he grinded it out in the grueling 36 holes even though there was no chance in hell he was going to qualify. Yeah, there are just under six years until the 2016 Olympics, but I’m assuming there could be more red tape than usual in the construction of the course where the Olympics will be played. Still, deep down I knew I was unworthy, and I figured Perocchi would either come to his senses or get talked out of inviting me. Chrisa€™s brother John is also an accomplished player, and the Oa€™Donnell boys have won the Swinging Bridge three times, most recently in 2006. Had he not withdrawn, he would have needed a near miracle to place in the top two for a trip to Pebble Beach.
Well, he dunked his tee shot in the water — which some felt was too aggressive of a play, but not according to Rickie, who explained in his post-round press conference. I love your floor, please keep us posted with the end results, can?t wait to see what it’s going to turn out like. I have done so much research and just haven’t found what I wanted, and these would work. I spent some time at the university there and have friends who still live in town and have offered up a place to stay. That said, it’s pretty obvious to anyone who has some working knowledge of basic mechanics. Do you see that as a competitive issue, why you may not tell us exactly what’s going on with some of the injuries you have. If the golfers are still out of position by the next timing station, a second red card is handed out, and each player in the group is assessed a one-shot penalty. There were strict regulations for the length of our shorts (I guess, skorts now, too), where they had to be long enough so that when we kneeled down, the space between the bottom of our shorts and our kneecap didn’t exceed the length of a dollar-bill. My friends always grumbled because they felt I got away with wearing shorts that were shorter since I was small.
I had a good job with Jerry Kelly, and when I left him to go back to Vijay it was purely a financial decision. That could be a really fantastic experience to write about, but not sure if I qualify since I guess I’m considered media now. If selected, he said he and Sorenstam would collaborate on the strategy of each hole a€“ Nicklaus from championship tees for the men, Sorenstam with women in mind.
I called my editor in New York City, who I knew has always had his own fascination with the Swallows. I know rules are rules, but when a player wins one of the most prestigious events of the year, don’t you think he should be exempt from qualifying? If you can get over there (my total travel costs, plane from Philly to Glasgow and train to St. I’m sure you and your friends are harmless, though, and I appreciate the generous gesture. I just hope he doesn’t putt from the fringe to get it close rather than trying to chip it in for the win again (like at The Players).
Those lines have a proclivity for blurriness, which lends to miscommunication and sometimes yelping. If your shorts looked too short, you’d be forced to do the test in front of officials on the first tee.
Once, I chunked a six-iron into the water in front of at least a handful of coaches, including the UCLA one.
Intern Kevin advised I pick Justin Leonard, but dude has come up short (not just talking about his height and distance) the past few weeks when he’s been in my line-up.
I ahven't done any nightfighters yet, and theres already 2 kits in the build list i have in the stash, so will be nice to get a heads up.
I also love his untucked shirt with his gut almost hanging out on his otherwise skinny body. Yale throws all the reunion attendees into a dorm and provides us with booze and food, so we can drink and party (and act like idiots) like it’s 2005. Well, lesson learned — and perhaps it will prevent other players from finding themselves in the same sucky situation in the future. The tile tear out, the drywall tear out, the wood floor installation…dust, dust, dust, DUST! At the same time, he was hitting it crappy off the tee going into this same event last year.
Okay, seriously, though, his swing looked really good and perhaps this talented underachiever is getting back on track after his severe drop to near-dreg level when he missed 10 cuts last season — in a span of 13 starts.
And if you didn’t pass, you better have a spare pair or hope the pro shop had some in your size.
In order to avoid hitting her with either the driver or the ball and to avoid killing her or causing serious damage to her, he had to stop his swing, as a result he was injured. What are the chances 99% of people are lawyers, doctors, bankers or soon-to-be Nobel Peace Prize winners? I was about 15 yards away and my back was turned, but I could tell it hit something close by — I felt some sort of residual shock and the air got all static-y. I mean, dude, it was 280 yards to the gully off the tee on the second hole, and yeah, it was downhill, but uh, I didn’t think that would come into play. For a quick refresher, Timmy was leading going into the 72nd hole, but left a par putt short to make bogey, which left him in a playoff with Steve Stricker. But now he’s won the fifth major, THE PLAYERS, so all if forgiven (but perhaps not forgotten).
